Chairman's
Corner
The winner of
the 2010 Las Vegas Chapter William J. Cornelius Memorial Scholarship
is Jhoana Duarte. Jhoana currently attends Eldorado High School and
plans to attend the College of Southern Nevada and take courses in
criminal justice. She has a 3.5 GPA and is ranked 24th in a
graduating class of 529. The scholarship is named after long-time
ASIS International lifetime member, William J. Cornelius, CPP.
Cornelius was an active member of the Las Vegas Chapter and had
previously served in volunteer leadership positions in the National
Capitol Chapter. The annual scholarship is managed by our Foundation
Committee, headed by Art Berry, CPP.
Remember, the membership drive "Reach Out" is in progress!
Every time you recruit a new member, you strengthen ASIS. A vital and
growing membership means greater recognition of the security
profession, improved educational and networking opportunities for
members, and the advancement of security worldwide. Also, referring
members has added benefits for you and your chapter!
If they join and put your name and employer (company) or phone number
on the membership application line marked "Person who introduced
you to ASIS", you get the credit, and we keep track of your
recruitment activity for you. It's that simple.
If you desire to remain a member of ASIS International, please make
sure you pay your dues immediately if you have not done so for 2010.
Board members will be contacting those members who have not yet
renewed, as we want to make sure that anyone who wants to be a member
can stay as one. If you have not renewed your membership, you will
not be receiving the magazine, updates, training notices, chapter
newsletter, or meeting reminders.
I hope to see you this Thursday at our monthly meeting. If I don't
see you, all you dads enjoy your day, congratulations to all the
graduates and everyone enjoy the start of summer.
Be Safe!
William C. Cage

ASIS Las Vegas
Chapter 060 Meeting Minutes for 05/20/2010:
Chapter Business
and Committee Activities:
The monthly
luncheon meeting was held at Marilyns Cafe at the Tuscany
Hotel/Casino with Bill Cage, Chapter Chair presiding. Meeting began
at 12:00 with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Bill started the meeting congratulating the new members and members
transferring in. New members: Richard Casto International Game
Technology. Members transferring in: Deborah M. Jacob, BizJet
Security LLC, Chris G. Carter, Consultant, Matthew Krol, Mandarin
Oriental Las Vegas.
Bill discussed the "On Hold" list from National headquarters.
If you have not renewed your dues for 2010 with ASIS International by
now, your membership will be placed on hold for 30 days. If your
membership is not renewed, you will be dropped from membership at
National and with the Chapter. The best way to renew with ASIS
International is to visit ASISonline.org. There is also a link in our
newsletter and Chapter website.
Bill asked for volunteers for the Education Committee. The Chapter
would like to do some training this year but we have not received a
lot of input from members. The Chapter needs this committee so we can
work towards providing training this year. Bill discussed the Reach
Out Program membership drive and encouraged all members to
participate. The information on this program can be found on the
Chapter website. ASIS National has also been sending emails to
members regarding the membership drive.
Bill announced
current training and webinars available and encouraged members to
check out the newsletter and website for more information. Bill also
discussed the International Gaming Institute and upcoming courses.
Tommy Burns, CPP discussed IGI and mentioned the training should
resume in July 2010. More information on IGI will be included in
future newsletters and on the Chapter website. Walt Quering,
Committee Chair for Newsletter/Webmaster, submitted an executive
summary of the website, newsletter and social networking sites.
Please contact Bill if you would like to read the summary. Walt
discussed social media and informed the members that LinkedIn is the
most popular site. He mentioned that Twitter is a very simple and
fast way to get information to the members. He encouraged members to
subscribe to Twitter and Facebook in order to receive up-to-date
information regarding jobs. Jobs are filled rather quickly and
opportunities may be missed if members are only checking the
newsletter and website. All social working sites can be accessed
through the Chapter website and newsletter.
C.T. Seidl,
CPP, Committee Chair for Membership, announced that a member cannot
change his chapter affiliation online. ASIS National must be
contacted by USPS, phone or email that the member is relocating and
wishes to change chapters. Art Berry, CPP, Committee Chair for ASIS
Foundation, discussed the scholarship program. There was only one
applicant this year for the $1000 scholarship, Jhoana Duarte, who
currently attends Eldorado High School and plans to attend the
Community College and take courses in criminal justice, she has a 3.5
GPA and is ranked 24 in a graduating class of 529. The chapter board
members will evaluate the application and make a decision within the
next two weeks.

A Note from the Webmaster:
We may also
announce training via our Twitter, Facebook or Linked-In accounts, so it may be
of benefit to subscribe to those services also.
Our Website is updated several times a month. At the
bottom of each page is the date on which that page was last changed.
We are using analytics on our Web site and have found
that readership has gone up steadily over the last few months.
The last three months saw an increase in site visits
of 22% over the previous three months. The percentage of those visits
which were new rose from 56.5% to 61.13% during the same periods. Not
only are we attracting more visitors, but a larger percentage of them
are first time visitors. Pages per visit were up 23% for the periods
involved, and total pageviews were up 50%

Chapter Dues

As you
know, the Las Vegas Chapter is solely funded by member dues. Member
dues for 2010 remain at previous years' amount of $30.00. Each
member will be receiving an e-mail from the Chapter Chairman via a
service called Intuit Billing Manager. This free service allows
the chapter to maintain a list of members, invoice and track payments
via a secure online service. We elected not to go with the
additional cost required to process credit card payments. You
will be able to pay the invoice with cash, check or money order in
person at any meeting. You may also remit payment by check or
money order to our mailing address. In either case, the invoice
will contain a second remittance page that contains your invoice
number. Please bring that with you or include it with your
payment so we can insure proper credit. In the past we have had
companies pay for the member dues and have had difficulty determining
which member that payment was for. We will not be billing the
two ASIS Life Members or three student members. We thank you
for your continued support of the Las Vegas Chapter!
Dues
paid by members are not deductible as charitable contributions for
federal income tax purposes. However, membership dues are
deductible for members under Section 162 of the Internal Revenue Code
as an ordinary and necessary business expense.
