ASIS
International
Las
Vegas Chapter 060
ASIS is the preeminent international
organization for security professionals, with more
than 37,000 members worldwide. ASIS was
founded in 1955 and is dedicated to increasing the
effectiveness and productivity of security
professionals by developing educational programs
and materials that address broad security
interest, such as the ASIS Annual Seminar and
Exhibits, as well as specific security
topics. ASIS also advocates the role and
value of the security management professional to
business, the media, government entities and the
public.
The Las Vegas ASIS Chapter # 060 was
chartered on August 29,
1976.

Chairman's
Corner
May 9-15 was Police Week in the United
States. Additional names were added to the
wall at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in
Washington, DC. Those included the names of
four Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department
Officers who died in the last
year.
Unfortunately, one more name from Southern
Nevada will be added before next year's memorial
services. Nye County Deputy Sheriff Ian
Michael Deutch was shot to death in the line of
duty on April 26, 2010 in Pahrump, NV.
The security industry also suffered a
loss of a security officer in the line of
duty. James Gruey, aged 54, an employee of
Special Operations Associates, was shot to death
on April 18, 2010. Gruey was working a post
at Clark County's Pearson Community Center when he
was killed, apparently by three unknown
subjects. LVMPD report neither motive for
the crime nor any further information on the
suspects.
The chapter extends its sympathies to the
family, friends and co-workers of Deputy Deutch
and Security Officer Gruey.
All of America and especially those of us in
the security profession were given yet another
wakeup call on May 1st with the events in Time
Square. A tee shirt vendor (and member of
the American Legion) observed an SUV that
JDLR1parked in
a no parking zone with its hazard lights on.
Luckily, the explosives which had been set off did
not produce the expected results. This
attempt along with others, uncovered plots and a
"successful" attack in TX all prove the point that
we are still at war with terrorist groups and
their sympathizers. Las Vegas, like Times
Square, makes for a tempting target. Let's
use these events as training examples for our
people. As they say, "If you see something,
say something".
The ASIS International, Las Vegas Chapter,
William (Bill) Cornelius Memorial Scholarship has
closed for 2010. The board will announce a
winner on or before the June meeting. I wish
to thank Art Berry for all of his hard work.
This being a memorial scholarship, we are in the
process of sprucing up the program and paperwork,
webpage, etc. More to come. (Thanks to Linda
Florence for digging up photos and
information!)
Once again, if you wish to volunteer for the
Education Committee as Chair, member, helper,
instructor, donator of space, anything, please let
me know. If not...people are going to be
"volunteered"! Thanks for your help
and support for your local chapter. I look
forward to seeing you at the meeting on
Thursday. Be
Safe!

Meeting

Topic:
Premises Security Cases
Premises security cases (and the
litigation costs) continue to rise, especially in
this down economy. Most sources agree that claims
against hospitals, colleges, daycare centers,
shopping malls and hotel/casino companies are
increasing dramatically. We will look at cases and
security issues that may help companies and
clients address and mitigate the
issues." Presenter: Tommy
Burns
Tommy Burns is a Licensed
Security Consultant, practicing in Forensic
Security Consulting and Expert Witness. He also
consults on Law Enforcement issues. He most
recently served as a dual-property Security
Director at Harrah's Las Vegas and The Flamingo
Hotel & Casino.
Burns entered the gaming industry
as a Security Director with Station Casinos'
Fiesta Henderson property in 2002 and later Green
Valley Ranch Resort, after spending more than 25
years in law enforcement with the Henderson Police
Department in Nevada. He retired in 1999 after
serving as Police Chief for five years.
Burns became licensed as a
security consultant and private investigator with
the Nevada Private Investigator's Licensing Board
in 2000 and has also attained the Certified
Protection Professional (CPP) certificate from
ASIS International in October 2004. He holds a
bachelors degree in criminal justice from the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a Master's
Degree in Organizational and Business Security
Management from Webster University. Mr. Burns is
also a Faculty Instructor in Criminal Justice and
Security Management for University of

ASIS Las Vegas Chapter
060 Meeting Minutes for 04/15/2010:
Chapter Business and
Committee Activities:
The monthly luncheon meeting was held at
Marilyns Cafe at the Tuscany Hotel/Casino with
Bill Cage, Chapter Chair presiding. Meeting began
at 11:55 with the Pledge of Allegiance.
Bill started the meeting congratulating the
new members: Adam K. Crandall, Allied Barton
Security Services, Matthew J. Dalsoglio,
Protection One, and Joseph Compnotta III, Ace
Protection Services. Bill discussed the 17th
International Tourism Safety Conference which is
being held May 10-12, 2010 at the Las Vegas
Convention Center. Bill encouraged members to
attend this conference. The Las Vegas Convention
& Visitors Authority is a sponsor of this
event and they paid our Chapter to put an
advertising banner in our newsletter. They have
also given the Chapter two paid tickets to the
conference, which will be given away in a drawing
during today’s meeting. To be eligible to win
the tickets you must be an ASIS member whose
membership dues are paid up and who is available
to attend the conference.
Bill also discussed current membership and
thanked the 92 members who have paid their dues.
The Chapter still needs the additional 132 members
to pay their annual $30 dues ASAP. Bill mentioned
that The Chapter would like to present a training
seminar this year. The seminar could be geared
towards officers or management. The Chapter needs
to know if there is interest in this type of
seminar and needs volunteers to work on the
education committee. If interested please send
Bill and email. Also, if you work for an
organization that might donate space for the
seminar please notify Bill by email.
Bill discussed the scholarship as Art was not
present at the meeting. Please note that the
deadline to submit the scholarship application is
May 7, 2010. Bill encouraged anyone with
employees, relatives or friends attending college
in Nevada to apply for the scholarship. The
application is available on the Chapter website on
the education link.
Bill thanked Carri Holmes, Secretary for
submitting the monthly meeting minutes in a timely
fashion and announced that the meeting notes will
be in the monthly newsletter for those who missed
the meeting. Bill discussed the website and
informed us that it is updated on a regular basis
as the information is received regionally and/or
from National. Bill also mentioned social
networking and how everything is linked to the
website. Bill announced current training and
webinars available and encouraged members to check
out the newsletter and website for more
information.
Bill also discussed the International Gaming
Institute and upcoming courses. Tommy Burns, CPP
discussed some cancellations and new classes for
June and July. More information on IGI will be
included in future newsletters and on the Chapter
website. Walt Quering requested information for
the newsletter and website. Glenda Gray-Meyer, CPP
read the Treasurer's Report, motion to accept
report by Carri Holmes, CPP, second by Walt
Quering. No nays, motion carries.
Joe McDonald discussed the ASIS group on
LinkedIn and the rumors being posted regarding
DHS. Joe reminded everyone that just because
something is posted on a social networking site
does not make it true. The drawing was conducted
and the two tickets to the 17th International
Tourism Safety Conference were won by Jeff White
and Walt Quering.

| A Note
from the Webmaster:
We may also
announce training via our Twitter, Facebook or Linked-In accounts, so it may
be of benefit to subscribe to those services also.
Our
Website is updated several times a month. At the
bottom of each page is the date on which that page
was last changed.
We are using analytics on our Web site and
have found that readership has gone up steadily
over the last few months.
The last three months saw an increase in site
visits of 40% over the previous three months. The
percentage of those visits which were new rose
from 52.48% to 58.71% during the same periods. Not
only are we attracting more visitors, but a larger
percentage of them are first time visitors. Pages
per visit were up 10% for the periods involved,
and total pageviews were up
53% |

Chapter
Dues

As you know, the Las Vegas Chapter is
solely funded by member dues. Member dues
for 2010 remain at previous years' amount of
$30.00. Each member will be receiving an
e-mail from the Chapter Chairman via a service
called Intuit Billing Manager. This free
service allows the chapter to maintain a list of
members, invoice and track payments via a secure
online service. We elected not to go with
the additional cost required to process credit
card payments. You will be able to pay the
invoice with cash, check or money order in person
at any meeting. You may also remit payment
by check or money order to our mailing
address. In either case, the invoice will
contain a second remittance page that contains
your invoice number. Please bring that with
you or include it with your payment so we can
insure proper credit. In the past we have
had companies pay for the member dues and have had
difficulty determining which member that payment
was for. We will not be billing the two ASIS
Life Members or three student members. We
thank you for your continued support of the Las
Vegas Chapter!
Dues paid by members are
not deductible as charitable contributions for
federal income tax purposes. However,
membership dues are deductible for members under
Section 162 of the Internal Revenue Code as an
ordinary and necessary business
expense. |
