Chairman's Corner
Since our last meeting, our friends at Metro have
experienced further tragedy. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Officer Trevor
Nettleton died while defending his family from armed robbers and Corrections
Officer Daniel Leach died as a result of a traffic accident involving his
prisoner transport van. Our condolences go out to the officer's families,
friends and co-workers. The Injured Officer Fund has helped the families
with expenses. You can make donations to the Fund at www.helplasvegascops.com.
November was our yearly business meeting. Discussed
was the year in review to include lunch sponsors, the revamped website (www.asis-lasvegas.org), the revamped
Chainlink Newsletter, our social networking accounts (Twitter, Facebook and
LinkedIn), the chapter's telephone system and the purchase of the LCD projector
and screen. We also covered the effort on policy and procedure compliance
and improvements in our activity and treasurers reports, a financial audit,
revamped scholarship program and changes in our committee chairs. The
chapter did not sponsor a CPP review or educational seminar program for 2009
and we've discussed possibilities for 2010.
The Chapter will begin invoicing for our 2010 membership
dues in January. We have decided to keep the membership dues at $30.00
and have selected a free invoicing method that should increase the
effectiveness of delivering individual invoices, sending reminders and tracking
payment. The Chapter did vote to raise our meeting/lunch fee from the
current $10.00 to $15.00 per person. This modest increase will take place
effective January, 2010 and is required to actually cover the cost associated
with catering the meals. Between this and greater participation in
members paying the chapter dues, we feel the chapter will be self sufficient
going forward and negate the requirement for fund raising events to cover normal
operating expenses. We also hope to realize additional revenue through
the marketing of lunch sponsors and through web and newsletter advertising in
2010. Should the chapter decide to become more involved with the
community through donations, award additional or greater scholarships or other
such activities, we will have to engage in additional fund raising
activities.
Ed Norton, presented on behalf of the Nominating
Committee. Each individual member of the 2009 board submitted their
intent to run for the 2010 year. One additional member submitted their
interest in running for one of several board positions if the current member
was not running again. Since that was not the case, the member withdrew
their intention to run. The Nominating Committee, finding that there was
at least one qualified member running for each of the four elected positions,
found no need to recommend nominations. With a quorum of the membership
present, the Nominating Committee report was accepted and there being no contested
position, there was no need for an election. The present 2009 board was
elected to their respective positions for 2010. The board members will be
sworn in for the 2010 year at the January meeting.
Should you have an interest in any of the Committee Chair
positions, please send me your interest and resume for consideration. All
current Committee Chair's are requested to send your interest in continuing in
your present position, your interest in filling a different position or your
intent to vacate your position.
Please read the section about the ANSI/ASIS Organizational
Resilience Standard and how to give your comments on the program. For
further information on this proposed standard and the need for comments, please
check out the "Hot Topics" section of the chapter website. It is also
time for yearly renewal of your membership with ASIS International.
I hope to see you at our final 2009 meeting this
Thursday. If I don't, I wish you and your family all the best during this
holiday season and a great new year!
Be safe.

The ASIS Critical
Infrastructure Working Group (CIWG)
A CIP Success Story
From it's early
inception in September 2006, the CIWG has evolved into a specialized resource
for both the private and public sector in the vast arena of critical
infrastructure protection (CIP) Comprised of ASIS volunteers representing the
nation's 18 critical infrastructures and key resources (CIKR), this working
group has already produced a 3rd revision of it's popular "Critical
Infrastructure Resource Guide" that is easily accessible and that provides
valuable resources and information for the CIKR communities. The CIWG has also
sponsored two highly successful pre-seminar sessions in conjunction with the
ASIS Annual Seminar & Exhibits.

Upcoming Training:
Understanding the Violent Mind in the Workplace
January 27, 2010 @ Noon Eastern U.S.
About the program: As the economy continues to fall, workplace violence is expected to rise rapidly. Understand the attitudes, beliefs, and mental images of perpetrators from psychological and law enforcement perspectives and learn effective redirection strategies. Components of a defensible workplace violence program will be presented to help participants determine the effectiveness of their own programs.
***** Web 2.0: Investigations That Move Beyond Google February 17, 2010 @ noon Eastern U.S. About the program: Web 2.0-a fairly new Internet feature- allows you to vet hires, conduct due diligence pre-acquisition, prevent competitive intelligence, and identify problem employees before workplace violence or intellectual property theft occurs. It must be understood, however, before it can utilized by investigators and security professionals. This presentation moves beyond Web 2.0 and reviews options such as social- and photo-network Web sites, mapping tools, and other Internet features that can be used for intelligence gathering and security assessments.
