business, the media, government entities and the
public.

Chairman's
Corner
Again, we receive sad news of
the loss in the line of duty of Officer Milburn
"Millie" Beitel of the Las Vegas Metropolitan
Police Department. As we all know by now,
Officer Beitel, a former United States Marine, was
assigned to the Patrol Services Bureau, Saturation
Team and died as a result of injuries received in
an auto collision the night of October 7, 2009.
Officer Beitel's funeral is scheduled for 11:00AM,
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton Roman Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista
Drive, Las Vegas. Officer Beitel's
partner, Officer David W. Nesheiwat is still
hospitalized in serious but stable condition at
University Medical Center. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to Officer Beitel's family, friends
and co-workers and to officer Nesheiwat and his
family. The Injured Police Officers Fund (IPOF)
has established an account for officer Beitel's
family at Nevada State Bank, #602029423.
Contributions for officer Beitel's family can be
made at any Nevada State Bank location.
In brighter news, we'd like to
hear from those of you that attended ASIS 2009 in
Anaheim, CA. While the economy showed itself
through lower attendance, there was still quite
the crowd. I have heard several positive
reports about presentations by Las Vegas Chapter
members.
If you haven't checked out the
new chapter website, please do. The site has
been completely redesigned from the ground up by
our webmaster, Walt Quering. It was designed to
and is serving as a great security resource site
with links to things ASIS, Security, Law
Enforcement and various resources in Nevada, as
well as the rest of the country. I would like to
personally thank Walt for all the hard work he's
done in designing the page, researching all the
resource links and web hosts, transferring the
domain and hosting to the new company, and
everything else involved in this project.
I look forward to seeing you at
this month's meeting.
Be safe.

Upcoming
Training:

Earn 15 CPEs Rated Best
Program Content and Best Handouts in 2008!
Core assessment and
resolution principles are universal-regardless of
culture or geography.
Violence risk assessment and
management is a specialized form of risk
assessment that focuses on quantifying the
potential violence risk between human beings. Once
established, it then focuses on using this insight
to drive effective intervention strategies to
minimize the risk and divert the behavior from the
targeted victim(s).
Gain a clear
understanding of how individuals decide
to act violently toward others. Benefit from
a practical, proven methodology that assesses the
behavior of these perpetrators and manages them
away from violent acts toward specific targets.
The focus is on practical case assessment and
management regardless of the environment or
elements of a case-whether domestic violence,
school violence, workplace violence, or domestic
terrorism.
-
Practice a direct,
state-of-the-art method for violence
assessment.
-
Understand what case facts are
the most critical for violence assessment and
find out how to obtain them.
-
Learn quick case triage for
better, immediate resource allocation.
-
Understand how to get
significantly more information per interview
with only a small amount of additional time,
including those interviews that may involve
persons with mental illness or emotional
disturbance.
-
Find the balance in case
interventions for best
results.
WHO SHOULD
ATTEND:
-
Security professionals
responsible for violence assessment and
management
-
Investigative professionals
wanting to enhance their understanding of
violence dynamics
-
HR professionals with a direct
or shared responsibility to provide violence
assessment and incident management
-
Investigative professionals
wanting to improve their interviewing
skills.
If you're responsible for case
assessment and management, you'll benefit from
this advanced-level program.

Awareness + Action =
Prevention
Sadly, the
tragic news of late has pointed out that
no business sector or work environment is immune
to the possibility of an active shooter incident.
They have taken place in workplaces,
college/university settings, shopping malls,
places of worship, and government buildings.
Workplace violence in general, and active shooter
incidents specifically, take a very sad human
toll, but they also have a significant impact on a
company's brand, reputation, and bottom line. OSHA
regulations place the burden for a safe and secure
work environment on the leadership of the company.
Risk managers, security, and human resources
personnel have to be focused on meeting their
"duty of care" responsibility in order to avoid
costly liability litigation. For these reasons and
more, being concerned about this possibility is
non-negotiable.
This
program covers prevention, intervention,
and response from the corporate,
college/university, and law enforcement
perspectives. Additionally, threat assessment,
dealing with the at-risk employee/student and the
impact on the workplace of intimate partner
violence will be addressed. Your company must
embrace the importance of planning, preparing, and
rehearsing what is known as a "survival mindset."
Best practices are discussed throughout the
program.
Current
economic stressors can potentially serve
as "tipping points" for active shooter incidents.
Don't take a chance-prepare for the worst.
IMMEDIATE
BENEFITS:
-
Enhance your
overall awareness of the costly impact of
workplace violence.
-
View your
organization's workplace violence prevention
efforts through a different prism.
-
Bolster your
program, through the use of Best Practices, by
doing an internal "gap analysis."
-
Learn what guidance
to provide employees and how to integrate that
guidance into your overall violence prevention
program.
-
Gain situationally
dependent survival options.
-
Learn the
distinction between an active shooter and
hostage incident.
-
Identify behaviors
of concern.
-
Recognize and
survive this type of
incident.

CCTV is the ideal tool for doing more with
less.
The
current economic climate demands you do more with
less-less people, less money, less upgrades to the
latest and greatest. All in all this translates
into less room for error. The appropriate CCTV
system could be your secret weapon in these times
of limited resources.
The
universal acceptance and popularity of video-based
security systems necessitates keeping abreast of
trends, technologies, and best practices. The fact
that these systems have become not only an
integral part of today's physical security
program, but a tool used by law enforcement and
private security forces as well, makes keeping
current nonnegotiable if you are a physical
security or surveillance professional. This
education-packed program focuses on video systems,
video analytics, video system management, systems
installation best practices, and other germane
topics. From corporate security director to casino
security operator to security installation
specifier to maintenance superintendent-everyone
stands to benefit from staying

Social
Network Sites: Can You Always Trust What You
See? October
21, 2009 @ noon Eastern U.S.
About the
program: In order for hiring
professionals to utilize technologically advanced
screening methods to make the hiring process more
efficient and timely, these technologies must be
used appropriately.
Just a few of the
questions that hiring professionals should
consider:
-
Should companies
and their screening partners be using social
networking profiles to determine hiring
decisions?
-
How is new
technology helping organizations integrate their
hiring procedures with their background
screening practices?
-
Is a national
database search an accurate, stand-alone method
of background screening?
-
Are adjudication
modules a reliable tool to use when performing a
background check?
-
How can one
determine the authenticity of an online
degree?
No two ways about it,
technology is impacting employment screening and
other elements associated with the hiring
process-making staying informed about the practice
nonnegotiable.

About the
program:
The term 'Security'
relates to many disciplines that range from
physical security to cyber security to national or
homeland security. As technologies and
applications evolve from using proprietary, binary
data protocols to open, IP based data protocols
the convergence of these disciplines is happening
at a rapid rate. Data standards are emerging
enabling organizations to integrate data from
various systems into information that can be used
for tactical actions. Systems from one
organization will be able to exchange information
with systems of another organization to achieve
operational interoperability. One standard that is
enabling this is the National Information Exchange
Model.

About the
program:
Web 2.0-a fairly new
Internet feature- allows you to vet hires, conduct
due diligence pre-acquisition, prevent competitive
intelligence, and identify problem employees
before workplace violence or intellectual property
theft occurs. It must be understood, however,
before it can utilized by investigators and
security professionals. This presentation moves
beyond Web 2.0 and reviews options such as social-
and photo-network Web sites, mapping tools, and
other Internet features that can be used for
intelligence gathering and security assessments.

The 2009 Reach Out! campaign runs from
January 1, 2009 through November 30, 2009. Awards will
be announced in January 2010. Recruiting a
member is easy when you find yourself interacting with
colleagues at meetings, online, on the job, or while
networking. Simply tell your colleague(s) how you have
benefited from your membership in ASIS and suggest that
they visit www.asisonline.org/store/membership.html to
learn more about membership and to join. If they
decide to apply for membership, they'll need to put your
name and employer (company) or phone number on the
membership application line: Person who introduced you
to ASIS. If they join, you get the credit. And we keep
track of your recruitment activity for you. It's that
simple.
Sometimes, it may be more convenient or
more appropriate for you to provide us with contact
information for an individual who is a candidate for
membership, and we take the next step. Complete the
online Referral Form and submit it to ASIS
electronically. ASIS will send the individual(s)
information and an application. However, you won't be
considered the "recruiter" unless the new member
provides your name on the application as the person who
introduced him/her to ASIS
