ASIS International

Las Vegas Chapter 060

ASIS is the preeminent international organization for security professionals, with more than 37,000 members worldwide.  ASIS was founded in 1955 and is dedicated to increasing the effectiveness and productivity of security professionals by developing educational programs and materials that address broad security interest, such as the ASIS Annual Seminar and Exhibits, as well as specific security topics.  ASIS also advocates the role and value of the security management professional to business, the media, government entities and the public.

The Las Vegas ASIS Chapter # 060 was chartered on August 29, 1976.

William C. CageChairman's Corner

The chapter's special meeting and tour of the Medco facility went well. The staff at Medco, who were very gracious, gave a presentation on their operations, took us on a guided tour, and answered questions. We were treated to a catered lunch as ASIS International board member and Medco Vice-President of Global Security Marene Allison gave a presentation on convergence as it has applied to Medco. On behalf of the Las Vegas Chapter, our thanks to all the staff at Medco, to Marene Allison and to our member, Dennis Urban!

Because Medco needed to know who and how many were attending, we used an event management and registration service - EventBright - for the first time. They provided us with a one stop solution for creating event flyers, invitations, emails, online registration, guest lists, name tags, and much more. They charge, similar to a credit card processing service, a percentage of the fees charged for the event. Since there was no charge for the Medco event, the service was free. From behind the scenes, I can tell you that service worked wonderfully and I anticipate using it in the future for certification reviews and seminars. If you experienced any unsatisfactory issues with using EventBright when registering for the Medco event, please let me know.

The 3rd Annual Nevada Anti-Terrorism Conference starts Tuesday, June 16. This event is open to current ASIS International members, however, you MUST pre-register, as no walk up registrations are allowed. If you are not in possession of law enforcement, government, or work identification from resorts and other critical infrastructure, I would highly suggest you bring your ASIS International membership card along with a photo ID. The Northern Nevada Chapter's Vice-Chairman and I will be presenting on Tuesday and we will have a table display set up during all three days of the event looking to recruit members. There was no charge to the chapter for the display table; ASIS national sent table displays and promotional material for us to use at the conference at no charge other than return shipping fees, which will be split with the Northern Nevada Chapter.

The UNLV International Gaming Institute will be presenting a one day seminar on Security for Bars and Nightclubs on Monday, July 27, 2009.  The all-day seminar is being led by ASIS Members Alan Zajic, from Northern Nevada, and Steve Baker, from Las Vegas. The fee for this training class is $75.00. You can find more information on the attached flyer, as well as the website.

The Chapter foundation's annual scholarship is closed to applications and a winner will be announced at this month's meeting. Thanks to Art Berry and Steve Young for getting the word out as we received 6 applications this year.

Remember to start planning for the ASIS International 55th Annual Seminar and Exhibits which will be held in Anaheim, CA, September 21-24, 2009. Anaheim is a nice drive from Las Vegas, and an even shorter flight.

The chapter is about to move our website to a new hosting service, after which you'll see a site with a new look, as well as new functionality to it.  If you're a web graphics geek, feel free to let the webmaster, Walt Quering, know about your skills, as I'm sure we can use you for our website, email newsletter, and other projects. Additionally, we are on Facebook now, so look for ASIS Las Vegas Chapter and friend us! As always, we are in constant need of content for the website and newsletter, so if you have any articles you've written, press releases you've issued, awards you've won, or other news about you, please forward them to us for inclusion.

In closing, I wanted to mention the big news event from a few days ago, the shooting at the National Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C. While there was a tragic death of a security officer, the good news is that a large number of people were saved by the quick thinking of the security officers on duty at the museum that day.

Special Police Officer Stephen T. Johns was fatally shot by the armed suspect. Special Police Officers Jason McCuiston, a former Marine who had worked as a police officer outside Atlanta, and Harry Weeks, a retired D.C. police officer, both returned fire and stopped the armed assailant.  All three were security officers with Wackenhut Services, Inc. and also held D.C. Special Police Officer commissions.

So in our normal day of accounts and budgets and regulatory issues, let's not forget what security is all about; it's the actual protection of people and things from the threats that they face. These brave security professionals faced that threat and, as a result of their actions, the many visitors and staff of that museum are safe.

Be safe.

Reach Out Program

The 2009 Reach Out! campaign runs from January 1, 2009 through November 30, 2009. Awards will be announced in January 2010.

Recruiting a member is easy when you find yourself interacting with colleagues at meetings, online, on the job, or while networking. Simply tell your colleague(s) how you have benefited from your membership in ASIS and suggest that they visit
www.asisonline.org/store/membership.html
to learn more about membership and to join.

If they decide to apply for membership, they'll need to put your name and employer (company) or phone number on the membership application line: Person who introduced you to ASIS. If they join, you get the credit. And we keep track of your recruitment activity for you. It's that simple.

Sometimes, it may be more convenient or more appropriate for you to provide us with contact information for an individual who is a candidate for membership, and we take the next step. Complete the online Referral Form and submit it to ASIS electronically. ASIS will send the individual(s) information and an application. However, you won't be considered the "recruiter" unless the new member provides your name on the application as the person who introduced him/her to ASIS

There are awards for individuals and for Chapters.  For more information see the page on the national site at this location,
http://www.asisonline.org/membership/reachout/default.xml
