Chairman's Corner
The lead off of this month's newsletter involves the sad news of the loss, in the line of duty of Officer James L. Manor, P#10027 of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. As we all know by now, Officer Manor was assigned to the Enterprise Area Command and died in a auto collision when another vehicle turned in front of him while he was responding to a domestic disturbance involving a 14 year old girl who reported having been assaulted and was bleeding. Officer Manor's funeral was held on May 15, which is National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Officer Manor is survived by his 7 year old daughter, family and fellow officers of LVMPD. Nevada State Bank has established the Officer Down Account - James Manor, #602029555. Contributions can be made at any Nevada State Bank location. I never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Manor, however he sounded like a great guy, outstanding police officer and tremendous asset to the community. When tragedy befalls such a person of Officer Manors caliber, we often ask the question "why him"? I have no answers. I do think it sad that we have to wait for someone like Officer Manor to die in order to hear what a fine public servant he was. Some of us are former law enforcement, some not, but none of us has to wait for tragedy, we can all thank a law enforcement officer for their service to our community. Last week was National Police Week, which occurs each year during the week in which May 15 falls. Police Week recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement and was established by a joint resolution of congress in 1962. National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Please look over the item about the upcoming 3rd Annual Nevada Anti-Terrorism Conference to be held June 16-18 on the strip. You are invited to attend, however you must register. June 18 is a law enforcement day only. I will be presenting to the conference about the benefits of membership in ASIS along with the vice-chair of the Northern Nevada Chapter. The chapter just received the updated member roster from national. A number of members have been dropped from the list as they have not renewed their membership with National. Please make sure you have renewed your membership and paid national, or you will not receive Security Management or any other benefits of ASIS. You will also be removed from the chapter member list. You can check online with ASISonline.org to check your national membership. You can check with our treasure Glenda Gray-Meyer if you're not sure if you have paid your chapter dues for 2009. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you want to volunteer for a committee Chair (legislative or private security), help on a committee, speak at a meeting, sponsor a meeting or advertise in the newsletter, please let a board member know. Dennis Urban, chapter member with Medco has sponsored a meeting, tour and presentation at their facility. Please look at the announcement below for details. This special meeting is in addition to the regular June meeting. For security and planning purposes, you will need to register for this meeting/tour. The special email sent out about this meeting and the notice below will take you to a page we set up with an event planning and registration company. The company charges a small percentage of any fees collected, unless the event is free, like this one, then there is no charge to us. We are in a manner testing out this service on this June meeting and plan to use it in the future for such events as our security seminar. Just another phase of the upgrade to our services and communications. I hope to see you at our May meeting, Thursday May 21 at the Tuscany

Intangible Assets-the cornerstone of your business' value.
To make it through these rough economic times, you've no doubt had to prioritize demands and make difficult choices. The long-term future of your company could well depend on the security of its intangible assets.
At no other time in business governance history has a larger percentage of value, sources of revenue, competitive positioning, and future earnings potential-more than 75%-been more deeply rooted in a company's intangible assets and proprietary know-how!
Build an information asset security culture that provides more timely awareness and pursuit of intangible assets violations. Security's role must be expanded and reframed to address the shift away from tangible assets.

The 2009 Reach Out! campaign runs from January 1, 2009 through November 30, 2009. Awards will be announced in January 2010. Recruiting a member is easy when you find yourself interacting with colleagues at meetings, online, on the job, or while networking. Simply tell your colleague(s) how you have benefited from your membership in ASIS and suggest that they visit www.asisonline.org/store/membership.html to learn more about membership and to join. If they decide to apply for membership, they'll need to put your name and employer (company) or phone number on the membership application line: Person who introduced you to ASIS. If they join, you get the credit. And we keep track of your recruitment activity for you. It's that simple.
Sometimes, it may be more convenient or more appropriate for you to provide us with contact information for an individual who is a candidate for membership, and we take the next step. Complete the online Referral Form and submit it to ASIS electronically. ASIS will send the individual(s) information and an application. However, you won't be considered the "recruiter" unless the new member provides your name on the application as the person who introduced him/her to ASIS
